Google DeepMind Releases Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview With Enhanced Reasoning
Google DeepMind released a preview of Gemini 2.5 Pro, its most capable reasoning model, available to developers via API.
What Happened
Google DeepMind on Tuesday released a preview version of Gemini 2.5 Pro, its latest large language model, making it available to developers through Google AI Studio and the Gemini API. The release positions Gemini 2.5 Pro as the company's highest-performing model to date, with particular emphasis on improvements in reasoning, coding, and multimodal understanding.
Key Capabilities
Gemini 2.5 Pro is built with what Google DeepMind describes as a "thinking" architecture, meaning the model processes queries through an internal chain-of-reasoning step before producing a final response. This approach is designed to improve performance on complex, multi-step tasks including mathematical problem-solving, code generation, and long-document analysis.
The model supports a context window of up to one million tokens, which Google states allows it to process the equivalent of roughly one hour of video, 11 hours of audio, or 30,000 lines of code in a single prompt. This context capacity was first introduced with earlier versions of the Gemini 1.5 family and has been carried forward into the 2.5 generation.
On benchmark evaluations published by Google, Gemini 2.5 Pro reported top scores on several third-party assessments including the Humanity's Last Exam test, a graduate-level reasoning benchmark, and the SWE-bench Verified coding evaluation. Independent testing results from organisations such as the Chatbot Arena, operated by researchers affiliated with UC Berkeley, also placed the model at or near the top of its leaderboard at the time of release.
Availability and Pricing
The preview release is accessible through Google AI Studio at no cost during the preview period. Pricing for production use through the Gemini API has been published on Google's developer platform, with rates structured by input and output token volume. Google has not announced a general consumer availability date for the model through Gemini applications, though the company indicated broader rollout is planned.
Developers can access the model under the identifier "gemini-2.5-pro-preview" through the API. Google stated that the preview designation indicates the model is still subject to updates and that a stable release version will follow.
Background
Google DeepMind, the AI research division of Alphabet, has been releasing successive generations of the Gemini model family since December 2023, when the original Gemini 1.0 was introduced. The 1.5 series, released in early 2024, introduced the extended context window that became a distinguishing feature of the product line.
The 2.5 release follows the earlier Gemini 2.0 Flash and Gemini 2.0 Pro models, which were made available to developers in early 2025. Google has characterised the 2.5 series as a generational step up in reasoning capability compared to the 2.0 generation, attributing the improvement in part to changes in training methodology that incorporate more structured reasoning during inference.
The release comes as competition in the large language model market has intensified. OpenAI published its o3 and o4-mini reasoning models earlier in 2025, and Anthropic released Claude 3.7 Sonnet with extended thinking capabilities in February 2025. Meta has also continued development of its open-weight Llama model series.
What It Means in Practice
For enterprise and developer users, the one-million-token context window allows Gemini 2.5 Pro to ingest large codebases, lengthy legal documents, or extended research corpora in a single session without chunking. The reasoning architecture is intended to reduce errors on tasks requiring sequential logical steps, a limitation that has been documented in earlier generation models across the industry.
Google has also noted improvements in the model's performance on science and mathematics benchmarks, which the company states make it applicable to research and education use cases in addition to software development workflows.
A stable, non-preview release of Gemini 2.5 Pro is scheduled to follow the current preview period, with Google indicating further details on timing and enterprise features will be published through its developer blog.
