xAI Releases Grok 3 API for Enterprise Developers
Elon Musk's xAI has opened its Grok 3 model family to enterprise developers via a public API.
What Happened
xAI, the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk, opened access to its Grok 3 model family through a public API, making the technology available to enterprise developers and businesses for the first time. The release positions xAI directly against established API providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in the competitive market for foundation model access.
Background
xAI launched Grok 3 in February 2025, describing it at the time as the company's most capable model to date. The model was initially available only through xAI's own products, primarily the Grok assistant integrated into X, the social media platform also owned by Musk. The company stated that Grok 3 was trained on a cluster of approximately 200,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, a scale that xAI said exceeded the compute used to train several preceding frontier models from rival laboratories.
Grok 3 was released in multiple variants, including a standard version and a reasoning-focused version called Grok 3 Thinking, which applies chain-of-thought processing to complex problems. The model family also includes Grok 3 Mini, a lighter-weight variant intended for lower-latency and cost-sensitive applications.
What the API Offers
The xAI API provides developers with programmatic access to Grok 3, Grok 3 Thinking, and Grok 3 Mini through a REST interface. Pricing is structured on a per-token basis, consistent with industry-standard API billing models used by competing providers. xAI has stated that the API supports a context window of up to 131,072 tokens for Grok 3, enabling processing of long documents and extended conversations within a single request.
The API also includes access to xAI's image understanding capabilities, allowing developers to submit images alongside text prompts for multimodal tasks. xAI has indicated that function calling and system prompt support are included in the initial release, features that enterprise developers commonly require for building production applications.
Market Context
The enterprise API market for large language models has expanded rapidly over the past two years. OpenAI, which launched its GPT-4.1 API with an expanded context window in recent weeks, currently holds a leading position in developer adoption. Anthropic's Claude model family and Google's Gemini models are also available via API, creating a competitive landscape in which xAI is now formally participating.
xAI reported raising 6 billion dollars in a Series B funding round in late 2024, bringing its total valuation to 50 billion dollars at that time. The company has described its mission as the advancement of scientific discovery through AI research, and it operates Grok as both a consumer product and, with this API launch, a platform for third-party development.
The opening of Grok 3 to API access also gives xAI a revenue stream independent of its relationship with X. While Grok has been a premium feature for X subscribers, an enterprise API allows the company to pursue business customers across industries that may have no direct connection to the social media platform.
Availability and Pricing
The xAI API is accessible through the company's developer portal at console.x.ai. New accounts receive a free credit allocation upon registration. Pricing for Grok 3 is set at 3 dollars per million input tokens and 15 dollars per million output tokens, according to xAI's published rate card. Grok 3 Mini is priced lower, at 0.30 dollars per million input tokens and 0.50 dollars per million output tokens, positioning it as an option for high-volume, lower-complexity workloads.
xAI has indicated that additional models and capabilities, including further reasoning and agentic features, are scheduled for release through the API in the coming months.
